The Lindy Hop Ensemble is adding a dollop of local flavour to its new production, Swing Stew, Asian Brew!
In addition to the usual swing and jazz pieces in the first act that is set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, this show will move on to feature an eclectic blend of music such as hip-hop, salsa and funk in the second act.
For a local touch, the third act will see a dance drama set in Singapore, complete with a "heartlander hero" and familiar Hokkien, Cantonese and Chinese tunes.
Said the group's artistic director, Jacqueline Tan: "We conceived the show out of a desire to express our Singaporean heritage through the unlikely medium of African American jazz dance.
"As 20- and 30- something English educated Singaporeans, we're embracing and giving new expression to the music traditions of our parents' generation.
The group is hoping to widen its repertoire with this production and attract anyone from "neighbourhood Hokkien speaking aunties and uncles to tourist curious to see what makes Singaporeans tick".
Added Tan: "We're showcasing a true East-West fusion that reflects our global consciousness as yound Singaporeans."
Jointly presented by YMCA of Singapore, the show, which took two and half years to conceive and produce, also features a dazzling array of costumes acquired worldwide.
It includes a collaboration with local dance musician Rajesh Hardwani, whose pulsating dance track, Sushi, sets the stage for jaw dropping acrobatic manoeuvres.
Hardwani's music is featured in the UK compilation, Asian Beat Bazaar, released on the Virgin label last month, which celebrates the best of Asian Underground sounds.
The Lindy Hop Ensemble also performs with local dance group LA Dance Connection in a lindy-salsa fusion number to the familiar favourite, Tequila, and jazz dance piece set to music by Prince.
